Quote: If I recall the reverse had strange colors and looked like a problem coin. Just an FYI--the coin arrived today and is better than expected--it's a solid EF. The color is much better than the pics on the auction; it's the medium-brown one would see in more-or-less problem-free IHCs from this decade. There are a couple tiny verdigris spots that can be minimized by a distilled water soak. The odd spots on the rev I would attribute to a rough LDS and some darker tones--not corrosion per se. |

When I get home from the holidays, I will study the coin more closely. From what I see now, the position of the "1" in 1890 against the bust/denticles appears to be correct. Secondly, I consider the slab-like serifs diagnostic of this variety--not easily explained otherwise. But after all, I have little invested in this coin and therefore I'm not dependent on a specific outcome. |

Quote: Only, and I stress only, if I knew it was a 1888/7. NickleGuy, what is the source of the picture you posted...I know it's not that auction. In other words, the pic you posted appears to be the S-1 1888/7 |

I'll just toss in that I've been very happy with my 60mm Nikon--it's the sharpest of my Nikon macro lenses--and the older AF type. While the D5200 requires lenses with internal motors to autofocus (AF-S type), most of the time I'm manually focusing on coins. I bought mine used--but in excellent shape--from KEH for ~$250. I can't recommend the outfit enough for used gear.
Of course, I can't argue with the spirit of experimentation--using less specialized lenses with bellows and extension tubes produces some great results, as I've seen here!

Sure--there are some variances in toning--particularly on the reverse. The way I interpret the photo, with the clearly stressed details (and maybe color too)--suggest the coin may look better in-hand. These are risks I take when cherrypicking. But we'll see--I'll post pics when it arrives. |
