Do some research on Krause Publications. I think you will find your answer to where these sets came from.

Krause put these out in lieu of official mint sets. The coins themselves are worth more out of the 3rd party wrapper- especially in higher MS grades. You will get between $30 and $40 per set on ebay.

US mint souvenir sets sell for about $40-$60 per mint with 83 being more scarce.

Thank you for the information. So if I was to sell these do would you recommend keeping them together or breaking them up individually. I hate to destroy the set.

I remember similar sets from my first try at coin collecting a a kid.

They used to offer a free "uncirculated year set" with a paid subscription to whatever coin magazine.

I have a few of those

Maybe this will help http://www.ebay.com/itm/1983-United...em1c20ddce95

Other than dual pennies it appears to be a similar set.

I'm sorry. I was confused, these are the Krause sets.

'82 quality is superb and '83 quality is good. These are about the only source for gem '82-P quarters.

Just disregard the rest of this post. It applies to the sets with the SOL medal.

There were various manufacturers and I believe these came from some outfit out west. These guys were the only ones who continued production after 1983 right upuntil 1987 when the mint set only half dollar forced them out of business. Remarkably sales were increasing right up through 1985 for these guys but '86 was something of a bust. The quality of their '82 sets is fair, '83 is good, '84 is substandard, and '85 is good. These are the only source for Unc 1985-P sm bust Philly quarters. There are also a few '84-D small motto reverse quarters in the sets. Packaging is good to stable... ...better than the mint.

I'd pay around $20 for an '82 set blind and about $40 for the '83 for this type. Gems of many of these coins are scarce and can be quite valuable.

I won't say they have no collector value - that's up to the collectors to decide, and I can easily see a case to be made - but they're not "official."

I suspect they're marketable, though.

Thanks CladKing. It is true they are not official but they are indeed hard to come by and would be the perfect addition to a collectors mint set collection. I guess i'll throw em on auction and see how they go. I can't find a good BIN price I feel comfortable with

What does the '82-P quarter look like? How about the '83-P.

It would be worth the trouble of getting good pictures of these if they are even just nice choice coins. The '82-P is really tough to find struck by new dies and the '83-P is tough well struck or not scratched heavily.

If there are any gems in the sets they are highly desirable since most gems come from the regular mint sets. Gems are really tough for all these except the '82-D penny. The quarters are just so tough there aren't even many to check for quality.

dmott88, I sent you a message offering to buy your sets and never heard back. I can tell you that I bought both 82 and 83 sets last week for $40. The 83 set came with an uncirculated 1992 Columbus half in gov't packaging. Hope this helps you with valuation.

Happened to see this older topic.
The 1982 u.s. mint souvenier sets (w/medal)
are selling for up to $150.00 now.
The 83 a little less. The after market 82 and 83
are even getting up to $50.00.
I am going to pick up an 82 set this week from a local dealer.
Also, look for the 1981-P, 82 P&D, and 83-D Type "D" quarters
in these and other sets.

Those sets are definitely collectible, and worth quite a bit over face value, since there weren't as many BU coins saved in those years.

I've read that the US Mint didn't mint any BU sets those 2 years to save money. They thought they were losing money on them.

The US Mint has made souvenir sets in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. I couldn't find a date range on them on when they started and when they stopped, but I remember buying a P&D souvenir set in 1978, when I was there and I still have it. I think it cost $6 for both P&D sets back then. Each mint sold a separate set, so you had to buy one of each, if you wanted both mints.

Plus a few dealers made their own BU sets those 2 years.

Here is some good info and differences on them:
