They were two of the sons of H. L. Hunt. Quote: Haroldson Lafayette "H. L." Hunt, Jr. (February 17, 1889 -- November 29, 1974), known throughout his life as "H. L. Hunt," was a Texas oil tycoon and political activist. He built one of the world's largest fortunes by trading poker winnings for oil rights, ultimately securing title to much of the East Texas Oil Field, one of the world's largest. Reputed to be the wealthiest person in the world at the time of his death, his many children by three wives inspired the television series Dallas.

A lot of the Hunt Brothers holdings were paper contracts. Not sure that would count. Government changed the rules on them and all they could do was sell the contracts and not take delivery. I think that might make Binion the largest holder of actual physical metal.

The Hunt brothers were rich and bought a LOT of silver contracts on margin. Then the party came to an ugly end. See Silver Thursday for all the details.

Where did they get it?
Not what you know all to often, but who you know. Their father was smart and established I am guessing without even reading the thoughts above yet....
The owner of my gold kiosk bus, goldbuyers at the mall, started with two kiosks in New Hampshire, 24 years old. A son of a successful jewelry store owner....

Two stores spread to 260 across 50 states, and last year we CLEARED 50 plus million. My bar I work at makes 6 million a year, one of the top in town bar none for prospective....
Speaking of kiosk we were number 1 in district last month (11 stores) and I hit the most bonus of any team member in our district. My boss said I was huge in coming on as he could not have did it all without me. We bought over 600 DWT last month alone and already have 235 this month (#1 again for now), as August is biggest month by FAR, via school starting back folks needing extra cash and it accounts for about a quarter, the month of August alone....
I mail ever piece I buy to owners doorstep, he owns his melt lol....
Now then, how would you like to have 260 stores mailing you gold each an every day, about 10% accounting for nice old gold coins?
I lost my old coin store job as they pull out of town and left me high and dry....
Sometimes thing happen for a reason I guess as I clear way better with bonuses at new job, keep your heads up opportunity will present itself, pmz as well.....

I bet those tax returns don't say 50 and 6 million, respectively.

I could speculate that the largest personal hoard would be a member of the Rothschild family.

Culture undoubtedly plays a role for how the super rich choose to preserve wealth. My guess is that the largest personal PM hoards will be found in Asia.

Humans just keep coming let me tell in the 9 or 10 warmer months of the year....
We have a high end menu for east T.N., lol. Like a tuna app seared sushi style on wontons is $12.99, lol. That may be cheap to some of you in higher cost of living areas. But down here a 13 dollar app is kind of high IMO. I sell a glass of KJ for 8 bucks and a tuna app and they have a ticket cost that many would get an entire meal at other places....
AC was out tonight in bar only, and I may have sweat more pounds off then back in my house league ice hockey days, lol....
I cleared like 130 tonight and it was real slow as it often is on Sunday nights, but steady. Always got three or four tables going or a couple at the bar top or two most of the evening even with AC out....

Sounds like a real nice place, Hawk. The prices are not all that bad, either. It's not easy to find a decent sit-down restaurant with good food for less than $15 a plate. We don't go out a lot but when we do it is likely to be someplace like Red Lobster, Juliano's Pizzaria, or Olive Garden. Nope, we are not fine food connoisseurs or anything like that but we do appreciate a decent amount of well prepared food that is tasty, looks good, and is relatively simple. Yes, we have a few fancy places that serve $50-75 a plate appetizers that they call meals but we avoid them like the IRS!
