On a more modest level, I saw J-M 1oz Ag bars selling for $35 to $40+ on ebay today, at the same time you could buy them from Goldmart for barely over $34. Lotsa fools drowning in the 'bay...... and lotsa hustlers making $ by buying stuff @ retail and reselling it on ebay for RetailPlusSome... |

1 gram gold bars should be selling for less than $70 each. That is still around 30% premium.
Gold makes much more sense in ounce lots, if you want to invest in the stuff.

It seems some people want to own gold as cheap as possible. . . even if that means paying the equivalent of over $4,000/oz. I was in a coin shop a while ago, and someone working there says they can't keep 1 gram bars in the store. They keep raising the prices, but as soon as they put them out, they are bought. I'm surprised we haven't seen more government issued coins in the extremely small sizes to take advantage. The only thing that comes to mind is the 0.5 gram kangaroo. I think they sell for around $50.

We all buy what we can afford, right? For some, an ounce of gold is never going to be within reach. Personally, though, if I could come up with $50 for a 1/2 gram, I'd wait and save up $200 for a 1/10 t oz AGE, Krug, or CGM. But that's just me. Small gold like this isn't for stacking, it's for peace of mind. It's about having a little something rather than nothing at all. I'm never going to fault someone for wanting that.

coinwatch, I'm not faulting them for their wants. I'm faulting them for their failure to shop around. They could buy (2) 1-gram bars for what they'd pay for (3) 1/3-gram bars. If you still had a little gas would you stop at the station with gas at 5 dollars per gallon or go to the one up the street where gas was 3.75 ? I will never fault someone with money to burn and a willingness to burn it. That's their business. It becomes my business to seek them out and sell them some overpriced scraps too. If I tried to sell stuff in my shop with that high of a mark-up, I'd be laughed out of the industry. |

I was looking at a 1/20 oz platinum Panda a while ago. It was like a delicate, tiny little flake. I didn't buy it because it was so small I was afraid I'd lose it or mistakenly let it fall on the floor and then vacuum it up during my next housekeeping foray.
But a half or a third of a gram? Wow! That's truly small. If I didn't tape that one to the inside of an ammo box wall, for sure I'd lose it in a heartbeat.

Fractional gold and silver are big with the preppers, especially in gram weight.
