Beautiful coin I've gone beyond my budget at times because it's part of the excitement of looking for those really special coins. Having said that, my description of 'going over budget' doesn't include major changes in the basics of life like meals etc.. It means that I have to recover by underspending my coin budget for a while. Interesting that I have a coin on watch from that same seller - the 1798 Large Cent. I'm just being curious at this point and showing some restraint. Is it just me or does anyone else think the seller's coins look a bit juiced?

He who hesitates...has to wait. Case in point; I was relying on an e-mail that I sent earlier in the day to see if a coin was still available. I fianlly goy tired of waiting and called the seller...only to be informed that it sold an hour ago! No.Th first thing that struck me about this coin was the blatant porosity of the obverse. And no, it's not the photography. The reverse shows none of it; it's PMD. There is no way this coin slabs as Original Surfaces. That makes the price high, and it will forever annoy you to look at. It's rare, but not unknown. There will be another. Walk past. This isn't the one to blow your budget on.

I noticed what SuperDave have pointed out when I look at the pictures for yesterday, but I don't know enough about the series. I would agree you can find a better one to blow your budget on!

SsuperDdave is the man...if he says pass, I would pass.
like I said, with a rare R5 coin why wouldn't they want to have it slabbed and graded. i'll tell you why...they know it will come back as detail grade.

Follow the advice of the experts.
And here's my advice. Save first, then shop. For two years I kept to a budget and bought only a couple of buffaloes and one Morgan. Then I got my husband a $20 gold coin for his birthday -- because I saved for TWO YEARS. And it is NOT and investment because I doubt that he'd ever sell it unless he was desperate and desperate people don't get the full value because they have to sell in a hurry.
For me, going to coin shows is like visiting museums. I got to look and learn.

I'm glad Dave said something. As soon as I looked at the coin, I thought that the surfaces looked off.

Quote: Don't have a reference but is this coin worth that? It's *nice,* probably high EF-AU Details, and that's near-Condition Census for the variety. As such, gut feeling is it's about a ~$1000 coin. This is truly a rarity, and even rarer with original surfaces. But the OP is a nut for this series, and even if the money were closer, I'd advise him to look elsewhere. This one would drive him around the bend.

Listen to SsuperDdave. Good advice given.
The first thing I thought was, "probably re-colored and crazy expensive for a raw piece".

Quote: "probably re-colored and crazy expensive for a raw piece" Yeah, that, too, considering what probably originally accompanied the porosity.

Wow, thanks for all the advise! I was concerned about the color too. I did contact the seller and asked if I could return the coin if it didn't come up as gradable with a TPG. This particular coin is extremely rare in high grades. It is one, however, that I will be able to find again. I think I will take a pass. Thanks again for all the input.

I finally got to look at this coin of concern. When I used the magnification feature, it is really porous. And I can agree with others who mention that a coin of it's stature would need to be slabbed before I dropped any money on it.
I also caught up on the other posts after my last one (woo-saa), Dave pretty much said the same thing...pass.
