There is no way that I could resist the temptation. If you buy it, you need to open it.

I agree with the price being not much more than for an open set, and I would open it. I see no " cool factor " in an unopened set. Nor would I pay a premium for it. I know that I have made this analogy in other threads regarding this subject but, I could never see the added value in buying a box of baseball cards and sticking them on a shelf, unopened, as an "investment" ? It all boils down to the motivation....
Are you buying it for the coins or the profit. If for the coins...open it by all means! If for profit...keep it sealed! Maybe if it is sealed you can submit it to PCGS for "first strike" designation.....lol

For me, with the exception of one or two coins, all my coins are for sale .. at the right price .. For this set, I have broken open 1955 proof set .. and put them in 2X2 boxes .. so would not just be the coins. I am sure everyone wants the coins they buy/acquire .. to be worth more then they paid for them ... that would be why the thought of a cameo Franklin. (muddle, yourmaking it hard seeing that nice one of yours) Also .. my brother was born in 1955 .. I am sure part of the cool factor might be ... having something he might want ..just to get some digs in ... If you watch enough antique road show .. collectables are worth more in a sealed box ... Gotta have vision, what will this be worth in 2055?

Read an earlier post of a friend of mine who bought a 1937 "unopened" set off ebay.. Turned out, when he opened it, they were all cleaned coins and some were not even proof. Buy the coin not the package. I would open it right away if I bought it. AND remove the coins from the packaging and put them into airtites.

I would stay away from it. Unopened adds no premium to me.

I wouldn't buy it because I could not take the inner turmoil. I would not be able to resist opening it and in doing so would kill the cool factor. There can't be too many of those around. Owning it would stress me out and I need a 1955 proof set. On the other hand, how can you not buy it? See, the idea is already killing me.

Quote: is there a chance of a high grade deep cameo Franklin? Sure, but the odds are much higher that there isn't. There is also a chance the coins are spotted or damaged. Probably a better chance than there being a high grade deep cameo Franklin in the box. Buying an unopened set like this probably pays best by leaving it unopened and then later selling it to someone else who has unrealistic dreams of finding treasure inside.

Nice pic muddler . Fine example . The price might go up 5 or 10 bucks but I wouldn't see a true collected to be concerned about the seal . Catch you a newbie and might get what you want . The thing I've learned , especially the hard way, is to be PATIENT . You will get what you ask , it's just a matter of time .

Looking at sold items on ebay the sets opened sell around $100-$120. Unopened ones seem to be $175 to just under $200. No idea what the shop is asking for it in relation to what they could sell it for. If it's around $125 or so it's probably a decent deal for what it is. The sealed 1955 boxes have more attraction because unlike the enveloped cello 1955s they haven't been opened and viewed and may contain higher grade coins or pleasant toning ect. It's a "blind box" attraction and like everyone has dug through and cherry picked the envelope sets by now.

In my experience, the mint didn't protect the coins in those well (just cellophane) and the vast majority in the OGP have been stored improperly and contain undesirable coins (in general).
