Commonly counterfeited isn't what concerns me, but coins recently counterfeited that nobody is aware of yet.

I think the fact that the commons are being counterfeited is even more alarming, for I'm more likely to be purchasing a fake Morgan, than one of these.

Yes, but CSOTUS, keep in mind this is specifically about years & mintmarks, not on series.

I didn't know about half of these gold coins, and what scares me is how accurate they look to the real thing - and they probably ARE gold too.

a way to fake a 1922 no d is using 1922 with d penny and grind off the d
making it look like a "Philadelphia" minted penny

That's a relatively easy fake to detect because of the well-studied die characteristics of the 22 no-D.

Seeing how often quarter eagles make the list is reason enough to never buy raw gold Indian quarter and half eagles.

These are just the ones they catch. There a probably a ton of slabbed fakes from before they were detected or that remain undetected. However, the worst is yet to come. I expect that in a few years the next generation of Chinese fakes of relatively common date Morgans and other coins will be almost impossible to discern. High def 3D scanning, CAD, laser etched dies, correct metal content, production techniques similar to the mint, etc. Dark days ahead for the hobby if they don't find a way to combat this.

Reading a list like this I breathe a slight sigh of relief because key dates are not my interest, so I'm arguably safe in that respect, but still echoing others it gets scarier and scarier as the fakes blend in better and better

I was surprised not to see the 1893-s Morgan or the 1877 IHC on this list.

The 77 Indian and 93 s Morgan have many pick up points (PUP) on genuine pieces. It would be hard if not impossible to get them correct on a forgery. The 37 D 3 leg Buffalo is another example with many PUP. The 16 d dime doesn't have many and there were a couple of different dies used so you really need to know what to look for. The 09 s V.D.B only had one die and I'm always surprised how many fakes are out there. Most can be caught because it has the Philly V.D.B not the San Fran V.D.B

The four possible MM positions also reveal a lot of the fakes. I was not aware of the Philly vs SF VDB - got a link?

Counterfeit-Detection:-The-Top-10-Most-Common-Counterfeit-US-Coins

Philly V.D.B the dot between the D and the B is closer to the D. The SanFran V.D.B the dot between the D and the B is centered.
