Exactly... I was specifically referring to Bank of America, and their customers.

There are a lot of things that businesses (any businesses) do not have to do, but are good PR, or advertising.

So yes, selling a roll or 2 to a non-customer costs money, I am sure. How much? 10 cents? How much does a bank gain in good will as a result? More than 10 cents?

McDonalds lets you use the restrooms even if you are not a customer, and that costs them money, but I am sure that the negative feelings if they did not would cost them in the end.

So yes, of course there are plenty of logical reasons to justify this behavior, but there are plenty of good reasons that they should not hesitate to give someone a small service. My local branch often has free coffee, and I would say that this generates quite a bit of positive feedback for them.

Most of my local banks have this, along with offering free water. A few even give free candy. Even some of the smaller banks offer some of these freebies. Can you all guess the only bank in my local area which offers nothing? Yes, Bank of America, of course!

I have often found that you get better treatment and service from the smaller banks than from the big national ones.

After reading this whole post...I'm pretty sad.
I have so many ill feelings now I don't even know where to start.
I'm speechless.
In short it shows the character of the company...and banks or any other business that acts that way has little character.

Has anyone ever walked into your place of business asking for directions?
They don't want or need your services at that time...but you take the time to help them on there way...if you have character!
If you don't, you say "your not a member here, LEAVE".

The technical commercial "definitions" with this are hilarious to me.
The biggest "abusers" to these definitions are the banks upper level management to begin with !
Providing coffee, candy, hats, golf tees, pens, matches (in the old days), etc., etc., are just what we "see"...
What you DON'T see, is them spending money on art to hang on the walls, going golfing to "court" clients or keep them happy, "seminars" in Vegas, ""dinners" and "hotels" in Aspen & Reno or Florida...."travel" costs....I could go on and on....I've known and been involved personally and commercially with banks. Yeah they're a "business" alright.
This "technical" -- "business to make a profit" thing is quite laughable, regarding CRH'ing.
It just boils down to GREED and where they want to cut costs to maximize their pockets and throw it away in other areas...and that's all there is to it.
They have a right to do what they want ...if it ever hurts them enough...guess what...they'll change-- no pun intended...

You could also ask at a gas station or convenience store, and they might not do it for you either. Nobody has to. Grocery stores usually do because you are a customer. I have also had this issue or other similar easy tasks that were refused at banks that were not mine. But when I was opening new accounts, guess who wasn't on my list..?

I think they did it right here. The cashier isn't supposed to so she asked her manager so she wouldn't get in trouble. The manager allowed it, but in a way that told you that it is something they don't have to do. Kind of passive aggressive, but they still made your change. Cashiers don't have any say on corporate policy. Most small town banks are a thing of the past.

The answer to original post is simple: banks are there to serve their customers only and not the general public. Sorry if that sounds harsh. I used to work for a bank as teller in my youth.

Banks are businesses and are in business to make money. Why should they do service for nothing? You are confusing a bank with a Post Office or some other government entity. They owe you nothing.

I guaranty the average CRHer would be back soon wanting more each time if they did that.

Not in most bigger cites they don't, because they know it would be abused. I was in a McDonalds in Baltimore last year and you had to get the key from the counter.

Bank of America would probably give Hillary change, and might even let her use the bathroom.
