So, they are getting melted down, although slowly. I thought that they might float around, unwanted, forever.

Did these actually circulate and can you still get them in your change?

You have to keep checking at the banks to see if someone has cashed any in.

These nickel dollars were used from 1968-1987, and then in 1987 they introduced the loonie that you might be familiar with today. So yes, these circulated. After the loonie was introduced, I think they started phasing these ones out. So you probably won't find them in your change (other than at the LCS, just for fun). You could find them in banks if anyone brought any in, just like mcshilling said

I have a bunch of these that will never be recycled at the Mint I think they are great looking coins and they complement the Silver dollars in my Canadian Set Nicely

Do you ever get lucky and find the odd Silver coin amongst these SPP?

I have, and silver 50c coins, and even silver US half dollars too. I have also found everything from Trade dollars to wooden nickels in those 5-gallon pails. That said, I have an excellent rapport with the dealers I get these from, so I usually inform the dealer of their mistake. If they tell me to "keep it", I buy them a coffee the next time I see them - if I get Trade dollars or junk tokens, the dealers usually owe me a coffee. I am grateful to get nickel dollars at face value in bulk, and I would rather maintain a good relationship and gentlemen agreements with those dealers...

Thanks for posting this.

I am always interested in how coins are collected in Canada.

Here in northwest Florida I see these type dollars come through the LCS .

I have kept one of each type of these, but had no idea if they had collector
value.

Sometime in the near future I plan on ovine back to Michigan. I am thinking
Canadian coins might be collected more in Michigan, than here in Florida.

I do try to put away Canadian coins that might have potential of selling,
once I get to Michigan.

I will have to read up on these nickel dollars ... in case I see some with potential.

We get lots of Canadian coins in our change here in Michigan @GR58. Just from the quarter down to the penny. Once in a blue moon you might find a loonie in a roll of dollar coins but that is rare. I used to have the entire run of nickel dollars some time ago but had to sell due to finances at the time.

Very nice SPP, I often get these from my bank when people bring them in.
I usually keep them to give out to tips at restaurants.

Maybe, I should start keeping them.
