A designated grade of PO-1 is the lowest grade given to a coin as long as the date is discernable ( poor-1 ) . A cull is a badly worn and damaged coin ,not in a collectible state . Usually bent gouged or corroded . ( no Numismatic value ).

If I had a coin like this, I'd keep it as a curiosity. It doesn't have any real value, but you may never see another like it.

Keep in mind if it was a true certified/slabbed P01, it would fetch a premium.

How would I determine it was a Po-1 without getting it slabbed/certified? Or is that the only way?

If you're not a grader or confident in your grading skills, forget it. It takes practice and you gotta know what you're doing and know what you're looking it. That's why I use this forum. Post your coins here for opinions before submitting them. Ultimately, the coin has to be in a TPG slab with a straight P01 grade to fetch a premium.

briarmentrout , If your coin has a readable date and nothing going on but good honest wear ( no problems )then likely to grade PO-01 .

Do you think I should take better pictures and post to the grading forum? If it's worth getting slabbed then I will.

This is not a PO-01. It's just a cull with a clear date and considerable ED.

Yes, I agree with the Frog. It has too much environmental damage to ever grade as a straight PO-01. Still, it's 120 years old.

Even if this coin graded straight, which it wouldn't, it would not make PO-01. Way too much detail remaining on obverse that would set it firmly in FR-02 territory, even taking into account the slick reverse
