Oh, my dear lord...ya know what, just never mind. I know it's not fake , and the question wasn't about that. I'm not gonna get any help here. Thanks anyway.

@ OP > Have to realize this is a coin discussion forum . All we are doing is discussing our opinions on your coin .I don't believe any of us would put our lives on the line and say either way that it's fake or genuine . The only way to tell for certain would be to send it in ,but that would be senseless as it just doesn't warrant it .

That's pretty much what one of my local coin dealers said. He said it seemed like it was genuine, but since it's not a known error, it probably wasn't worth getting slabbed. I'm just curious as to whether or not anyone else out there had one like it or more info. I'm just frustrated I can't get a better pic to fit. I literally took over 20 photos and tried every way I could to get them under 300 kb, but the ones with good clarity we're just too big. I really do appreciate the help.

Looks like old damage to a real mintmark. Damage around the edge deformed the mintmark and UNITED. Then it may have circulated for a while and wore the damage down to this circle.

I'd like to see a clearer picture of the obverse. In the blurry image posted the 2 of the date didn't look right. I do suspect this MIGHT be a contemporary counterfeit.

Khol,

A couple of thoughts:

First, here are two pictures of 1912 V nickels, MM S & D taken from PCGS's website. Both are graded F12:

So-This-V-Nickel-Has-A-Dot-Where-The-Mintmark-Should-Be-And-Odd-Lettering.
So-This-V-Nickel-Has-A-Dot-Where-The-Mintmark-Should-Be-And-Odd-Lettering.

Notice that the MM is showing significant flattening and rounding on these, just like your coin. Someone else alluded to it, but I think the smaller, lower circle is a flattened MM.

Second, when you make a post and solicit opinions, you're going to get opinions.

Some of them will be on point.

Many of them won't.

A few of them will be helpful.

A couple will be backed by thought and analysis.

Some of them will be, uh, opinions (how's that for diplomatic?).

The key to getting the most out of the forum seems to be sifting through the chaff to get to the wheat. Learning to look past the "Your pictures were awful and I can't see anything but I'm absolutely certain your coin is fake/worthless/not what you think it is" type of posts appears to be a necessary part of the experience.

Such, I suspect, is the case with most of life when it involves the internet.

Stepping off my soapbox now.

Nice coin by the way.

Thank you, HGK. I can't for the life of me get a better pic small enough to post. It's completely unremarkable. Just looks like a regular obverse. No damage or weird wear. I'm tempted to just send it in, but I suspect it will be a waste of money. I took many pics, tried far away to zooming, even zoom, screenshot, zoom, but the file sizes are just too big. Sometimes I get lucky with a good shot, but it takes a lot of time. Thanks again for your help and time.

Also, I have a few 1912Ds, one of which does have a flat D. Believe me when I say I'm not "denying the obvious" or anything, and I'm not rookie. This guy's just got me stumped.

My thoughts are consistent with Tanman's: old circumferential damage that is worn smooth.

I'm going to go with something different from everyone else. Genuine 1912 plain with someone messing around with soldering and adding stuff to the reverse, and then the coin got worn down further after that. If true, it would be post-mint damage.

The coin is genuine. The blob looks added.
