I didn't get this in change but it was a small $100 cash withdrawal & one of the five $20.00 notes happened to be this one:
Fantastic!

Nice! An ultra low serial number! I don't have a low serial number yet but it's on my bucket list.

It sure is. Very true.

But were you banging your head against a wall thinking, "WHY COULDN'T IT BE NUMBER 1?!!!"

Concerning the 1954 mismatched serial number notes.
What is a fair price for these notes?
How often do they become available?
Where should I look for pricing?

That's a good question. A 1954 $1 note with an H/O prefix sold recently at session 2 of The Prominence Sale XIII for $358.50 including buyers premium.
I'm actually surprised it didn't sell for more money as it looked EF or better.

They show up on the major numismatic auctions periodically. Icollector and The Canadian Numismatic Company website are good sites to watch. You can check their archives for prices realized.

I would have thought that an error like that, and at that high a grade, would have sold for more...

-Me too!
Auctions are always so quirky here. I always try to keep the words of the knowledgable Don Olmstead in mind, "there's more American collectors of Canadian banknotes than Canadian collectors" in mind. This, he told me at one show especially applied to Canada's "sweetheart series." (his words: for the first 3 series of Bank of Canada: 1935, 1937 & the 54 Devil Face series).

The 1954 Modified series "just does not get the respect it deserves." Again, I almost quote Don word for word. Low #, errors & so many replacements often sell far below what one would expect given their tiny numbers issued. This, all b/c "World demand" is far less (for Modified & anything newer than that) than it is for the "sweetheart series."

I have been started to sell my banknotes on ebay, my daughter and wife don't want to do anything with them.
Some I've made money on, others, not so much but that's the way it goes.

At first, I listed them with a starting bid of 99 cents - 2 of my auctions, 1870 shinplasters didn't get any bids and I cancelled them to prevent one dealer from taking advantage of me.
He seemed PO'd but that's okay with me.

Now, I put a price that I feel will attract bids without getting ripped off.

I am just a keeper of these notes for a younger generation.
