It's got some nice luster, but it looks to me like it might be AU rather than mint state (although I don't know much about Chilean gold coins). An NGC-graded MS-63 sold for much higher at Heritage last year, but I doubt there's much upside to grading it if it's AU.

@ zurie, I thought high AU low MS depending on whether the rumor is true that gold tends to get graded more generously; but as a gold coin I'd need to submit with uncertainty I don't think I'm interested.

I think mint state from the photos. But well above melt in that expectation is a game you do not want to play.
I saw now your other topic with the shop window photos. Nothing looks like a very good deal to me. Have you considered the papal coin if a little above melt? Always popular, papal issues. That was what I would get if I wanted bullion with some numismatic interest.

@jecz, I considered the papal coin but it has a decent amount of hairlines in hand from a clean and I have bought some papal coins to resell before and they do very very poorly in the u.s. The European market for Vatican issues is likely double or triple the u.s. interest.
Also, the coin is €110-120 over melt; it's one of the higher premium coins he has. I disagree there weren't / aren't deals to have at that shop. He had two sovereigns priced €6 below melt; a distressed Victoria and a common Elizabeth. They sold within a day.

I buy some things to resell (playing cards, chess sets, etc.) and some coins (mostly 90%) but I also collect coins I find interesting; so my parameter is if I can own it and learn something from it and sell it on I don't mind buying it and deciding what to do later. I wouldn't pay the asking price for any of the coins at that shop window but some are interesting to me and I'd consider making an offer on a few.

The melt value is always lower than the spot value. The difference is always more than 1%. Depends on the foundry and the day, how the price has moved recently.
But I agree that you will not find anyone knowledgeable swelling to the public lower than 1 or 2% below melt. These days.
It is good if you save some historic coins from the melting pot. I am still hanging to some I picked just so they were not melted.

Congrats on picking this up when gold was below $3000. Plus, now it's authenticated with a straight grade.

It is a small coin but the rise in gold perhaps compensated the disappointment in the grading.
Congratulations to IndianGoldEagle for evaluating exactly as it was. You are very good at calling grades!
