My initial reaction was also XF-40. May get net graded down to VF-30/35 for scrapes and old cleaning.

i think its a little low but I've seen this before on these early pieces. I see more strike issues than they probably attested to. its a super nice example of an 18th century dollar

panzaldi you are correct about the strike issues with the early dollars. Below is a PCGS MS62+, BB165 with the same strike issue on the reverse. If the grading on the 62+ is correct, the OP reverse sure does not look like a VF30. I typically do not buy coins with strike issues, but on the 1799, I did make an exception.  |

slider I think it comes down to the person they assign the coin to. . you would think they should be able to discern the difference between strike and wear. a good bit of what we see here, especially the reverse, is strike. this always has bothered me as I believe a coin should be assessed based on how it left the mint. even looking at the obv of this coin, the sharpness of the stars, lettering, date and curls on the top of the head all point to weak strike.
the price difference on this coin between 30 and 35 is negligible so I guess its not that big of deal.
based on your initial comment it sounds like you attributed it already as there are like 1000 varieties

Just got the 1799 in hand and below is a photo of the coin and holder. I am going to ask the seller if it has been to CAC as I am not seeing anything that would hold it back from a sticker.   |

The coin has been recently put in a PCGS holder and the original photos posted are PCGS True Views that show the coin with light brown toning. I am not sure why PCGS puts out photos that the color is off. My photos show the color as it looks in hand. The seller's photos made the coin look dark. Below are three different photos and the challenges that we face buying from photo's online. What coin would you Buy?
