Dad's 1875-S US $.20 Coin

NGC Price guide at VF is $300 (recently increased). That makes it well into the area worth slabbing.

If you only need one coin graded by NGC, it going to cost you about $100 for economy grading, associate membership, and shipping fees. if you only have one coin graded, using your dealer may be the best option if you can piggy back onto his order.

If you get the premium membership it cost $159, but you get a $150 grading credit. This works well if you have other coins that need or want graded. It is only good for a year.

Coins must be sent in a flip 2.5" x 2.5" none PVC. Follow NGC instruction on packing, shipping. For an economy grading, I would send it Priority Mail small box.

See if there's a local coin store you can go to, to help you with submition, or check the next upcoming coin show. Just about every coin show I attend has a grading company set up. Best of luck.

Well, you guys sure know how to burst a bubble—and then inflate it right back up!
When you guys here first called it a Fine 15, my heart sank because I thought we were talking about a common pocket-change coin from 1975. You can imagine the absolute joy when I realized that it retails between $225 and $335 in this condition, and up to $500 if it sneaks into a VF-20 holder, definitely made my day.
My dad and I have been hitting up Brian's shop together for years! My father loves his honest sarcasm.

IMO.it's much more fun in a simple black-ring capsule. Because There is something magical about holding the silver my dad held, laughing together while wondering what kind of wild western brothel ,saloon trouble or a poker game it paid for back in the day.(love the stories about the old West.!)
I'm keeping all its wonderful character intact so I can eventually pass this piece of history with dad's awesome legacy~down to my kids.
And hey, if I ever do want a perfect, pristine version trapped in plastic, I'll just make Brian give us a massive multi-generational discount on one of his!

My father once gave me an 1875-S 20c piece when I was a kid. The coin, while loose and probably dipped at one point, would have probably have graded VF(35) or EF(40), depending on the day the grader is having. I left it out on the window sill in a manila sleeve to give it some color (long term process--as a teenager I was experimenting), and my mother invited a workman into my room when I was at school. The coin was stolen.

While losing a valuabe coin devastated me, what hurt the most is that I purchased the coin from a legendary Philadelphia based coin dealer who is the wife of another legendary dealer my father bought coins from when he was a kid. This coin once belonged to David, then his wife Cathy, who were a part of my father's life I didn't get to interact with as much as I wanted to. The loss of a coin that linked me to my father's roots hurt the most. I have since bought my own 1875-S 20c piece that is a bit nicer than the one I had as a child, and with some really cool color, but that pedigree of belonging to people who knew a side of my father I wanted to see more of myself meant everything to me.

My point: I am glad this coin is meaningful to you. That is reason enough to get it graded (it will be preserved and protected in a slab!) and treasure it no matter what silly number it gets. Having your own story attached to a coin is worth more than the difference between a F(15) and a VF(20).
