This is indeed a coin that many collectors downunder would like to add to their collection.

TKC, may I ask what you are basing it on to say this coin is Almost too likely to be counterfeit but depends where you got it from and how much?

I would be happy to learn and be enlighten by a Guru .

Good question Lim ...
Indeed I know where coin was found(found - not bought!). Along with many others trapped under floor-boards for untold decades. Look here ....(After registering, scroll down to volunteer "The List"

Incidentally, notified owner coin is likely valuable and offered to buy. But when said coin worth maybe $500. and offered just 1/2 that, he declined. Now suddenly has himself become coin collector(?)
I'm guessing his next move ... will do rounds of coin dealers looking for mega-bucks. But also know they'll offer even less than me; their catch-cry; "Can't spend money on something that won't sell --- don't know any-one who'd be remotely interested. And if I did, they wouldn't pay me more than I'm offering you ... and I gotta eat, don't I?"

Cheers,

Goodasgold....I have to admit I do not know enough about this coin to shed any additional light other than it can be a pricey coin in the premium grades.

I had a quick check of ebay's auction history and found one that was passed in without any bids at $500.00.

Have a look and make a comparison

Thanks, Lim ...
Reckon ebay coin bit better grade, albeit only 1/2 Mark and not 5 Mark like mine(his).

Here we go, here we go, here we go!

Would you jolly-well believe ... Just picked up KJC Money Auction lift-out, spilled from current CAB magazine, and nearly fainted; right there on page 10 - lot 179. "German New Guinea, Silver Mark, 1894A. UNC AU$3,500." (!)

But must empathize; this particular coin is UNC - Big difference!

What, did you manage to persuade him not to soak any more coins in the acid-of-grapes? Well done!

That seems to be a German (maybe swedish?) medal, but what exact it is, I am not too sure except it might seem to be some sort of routes in the country.

Well mate; old bill at best can be a touch cryptic. Try this ....

"No, I didn't clean coins; just soaked medalion in vinegar!", when asked.
Then later on after looking thru' umpteen coins he gave me to check, one thing soon became clear - Bill told me porkies!

On the 'phone later I chastised Bill for giving coins a rub, but he was still adamant(no, not the rocker) he never did it. So I gave Bill an out with, "Did you have some-one else take a squiz at these coins before me?"

The answer was of course Yes and we're still friends - haleluja!

The German 5 mark has been copied by the Beijing group - they are identified by the rough fields on the coins. They were copied with a fine grained plastic (like a dental plastic) but the dies produced copied some minor sirface damage. All copies I have seen come from the same original host. I second the idea that the source of the coin has to be 100% guaranteed to be sure you have an original.

I bend to your wisdom, but surely 100+ years under floorboards and on top of who-knows-what kinda soil matter would greatly affect original condition anyway! So how can we ever be sure ... short of calling in CSI ?

I do know however, where coin was found can be 101% established..!

Cheers,
