Looking at the surfaces of both coins I see what looks like signs of casting, the little spots could be casting bubbles. Also the rims look a little to wide to me and the metal doesn't look silver, though that could be the picture. This series is widely counterfeiter in China. IMO they are counterfeit.

what I did is that I learned from my mistakes, trusted some good sellers, and started small IS THIS AN OK REPLY? DID I DO SOMETHING WRONG HERE?

Staying away from all that... My opinion would be that they are not real. They have a granular look to them, as well as the darkness around the devices is typical of the copies. I have one that looks identical that is a no-doubt copy (and bought as such for education purposes)

Opinion here. Trade dollars are something you really should purchase in person from a trusted source as they are highly counterfeited. Sure, there are honest sellers out there on the net too, but why take the chance? Of course, if someone is offering a 7-14 day return policy, and you'd have time to get the coin checked out, then maybe. Good luck.

The coins in question do not look real to me. My suggestion if you are interested in this series (or any other for that matter) do your homework on the series, if any issues are often counterfeited, added Mint Marks, ect. before laying down any cash. As for Trade dollars I would suggest only buying certified examples (PCGS, NGC, ANACS) from a reputable dealer unless you are very comfortable grading and determining if the coin is genuine or not before buying any raw coins, esp. off of ebay or any other online site.

I've seen photos of fakes next to real ones, and have held a fake in one hand with a real one in the other, and this is one series I absolutely cannot tell the difference. Not that I am any expert, mind you! Give me a fake Morgan and I will nail it 4 out of five times, but Trade dollars always throw me. And there are SO many fakes out there! I wouldn't touch this series without one of the Big Three TPG's (NGC, PCGS, ANACS) certifying it. Then you have to worry about fake slabs! No wonder I stick to bank roll coin hunting; counterfeits give me a headache!

My opinion- both fakes; bad surfaces, bad rims and problems with dentils and some other details that forgers often don't get quite right. I've looked at hundreds, maybe thousands, of Trade dollars on ebay and I believe that at least 95% of the raw CC Trade dollars are fakes. They are getting better all the time, so buying certified is the way to go... of course, a Counterfeit Detection group that I help moderate has a photo album full of fake PCGS slabs containing fake (or bad quality genuine) Trade dollars.

These are getting tougher and tougher to tell real from counterfeit. My recommendation to all would be to buy these in a reputable slab (verify that the slab isn't counterfeit as well) or from a dealer you trust. Never raw off ebay ... NEVER!

TDColl....thanks...Even not knowing a thing about Trade dollars, during comparison to a PCGS-cert dollars I quickly spotted problems with the fingers and the area around Liberty. Counterfeiters sometimes do too well with details....it's a bust.

Trade and Seated dollars are becoming very hard to buy un-certified from my seat. I think there are more fakes out there them they ever minted originally. I have seen and held about 20 bad to great fakes that a friend of mine has. And the really good ones are silver and have the weight almost prefect. As I do not know if the ones are real or fake I will stay away from that part of the post. But I personally know some very knowledgeable dealers that have been burned by solid counterfeits
