I actually had one teller tell me, and I quote, "the Haitians really like the Eisenhower dollars and ask for those and $2 bills".

I think any area that is economically depressed is more likely to have good coins turned into the bank, with people desperate to stave off foreclosure or pay for gas or whatever. Particularly areas with an older population have good potential (you always hear stories about desperate widows turning in their husband's coin collection).

I use to have a head teller at one bank (Frist Bank-local) that would order me halves, pull coins out for me, etc. I took her out to lunch and became friends. Sucks to be me but 6 months after that I helped her move out of town because her and her hubby got a divorce. Swear if I hadn't been married I'd of dated that gal. I still go into that bank even today but not had the same relationship with anyone there. They are nice enough but isn't the same. I dump all my coins at Suntrust. They have made me mad on more then a few times. Of course now Suntrust has glass partitians between you and the counters. So it makes it even more of a pita to turn in large amounts of coins, etc.

The banks I deal with (Phila suburbs) all get their boxes of coins from Brinks, so I don't know that we can determine if brinks got the coins from a low income area or not. I am not an expert but I suspect Brinks has a coin center in Phila. They buy bags of coins (probably from TD and Coinstar) then roll them and resell them to banks. With that... How would I be able to get coins from a low income area.

TD bank doesn't even accept rolls of coins for deposit, they make you dump it in their machines. I asked one time if I could buy one of their bags out of the machine and they said no, they all go to brinks.

TD does sell me boxes without an argument. Bank of America sometimes hassles me and I even have a business account there.

i tried to do that tim. I picked up a few boxes in a real rich neighborhood in san diego. worst boxes I have ever had. so I went a little more south to a poor area and had minorities. the boxes were not as great as I hoped. but I only got 2 boxes, so i'll have to keep getting boxes there to see what the actual results are.

Customer wrapped rolls. Forget boxes unless you are searching cents.

And there is sort of a reason for that situation of good coins in bad areas. Many criminals that rob homes, coin stores, etc end up dumping their coins in a bank or counting machine in a store. Usually in the same area they live. If that bank does their own counting and rolling, then it is really possible to get some really great coins. If they send out those coins to a main office or headquarters, then it makes little difference where the bank is located.

I've done a lot of boxes and never gotten customer wrapped rolls. what do you say? do you say "do you have any customer wrapped rolls of dimes? may I purchase all of them".

I am about to start roll searching, probably cents, what bank do you think would be friendliest to buying rolls of cents and how do you normally approach the teller?

Asking "which bank" is a lot like asking "UPS or USPS", "McDonalds or BK"?

Smaller banks and especially credit unions may work harder to fill your needs, but they may also find it easier to just tell you "it can't be done".

It's really just a matter of the people running that office.

And that is really true. To each their own ideas of banking.
One thing to remember is if you do go to a poor, bad, not the best neighborhood type of bank, there are some things to worry about. When leaving that place and carrying a large box of bag of coins, criminals may well think your a currier for some organization and you have a fortune in them. You well could be followed home you know.

Your questions are valid, but only you can answer them since all locations are different. Do a bit of footwork and you'll soon have your answers. Start with the banks closest to you or those you do business with, and even within those banks, you'll find some tellers more friendlier than others. It certainly helps if you have an account with whatever bank you'll be obtaining your coins and dumping them again. They want happy customers!

I have only been searching boxes of cents for a few weeks now... I was a bit apprehensive at first too, but it was really no big deal to the bank. I went to a branch of PNC which is the closest bank physically to me, and the bank I have all my accounts with. Before I approached them wanting boxes of pennies, they had no clue if I was a customer or not, because I never went into the bank, but they know me now! I went to a cute young teller and confessed I had no clue as to what I was doing, but my son wanted to get into coin collecting and asked if was possible for me to purchase a box of pennies? (I didn't have to guts to admit the pennies were for me... it was easier to blame my son, lol) The teller asked first if I had an account there, and then could not have been friendlier! Now every time I go into this bank for a new box of pennies, this same teller goes out of her way to greet me and ask about our search! I usually get about a box a week (I'm slow) and I just trade in one box of pennies for a new one, there are no problems at all. They even give me a big batch of new penny wrappers to re-roll them (they don't have a coin counting machine). So, I have no issues or problems with my roll searches... find a friendly bank and teller, and you won't either!

Good luck... keep us informed, and welcome!

My favorite bank is Huntington. I don't have an account with them, yet they order me a box of halves every week. At PNC I have an account and for some reason or another they'll order them once or twice a month even though they promised me one every week, so now I dump at there. But honestly I really do love Huntington. They are so courteous and have always been helpful even when I first starting roll searching. If only I didn't already have three different bank accounts.

If your single and don't want to blame it on an imaginary son, I used the line "I quit smoking and this keeps my hands busy while watching tv, I just like to collect the old ones".

Now I don't care, I think once you start getting past one box a week they think you are weird regardless.

Oh, and the best way to approach a teller is with your hands in your pocket of a loose fitting coat. Preferably looking around at the security cameras and acting a little strange. Once they figure out you aren't about to rob them, they are happy to help you.

I actually go in to my dump bank with a shoulder bag. When I enter the bank, I get looks of "oh shoot" from a whole bunch of employees. By the time I start walking towards the change machine it's ok. Guess they shouldn't have a branch policy against selling rolls of coins to non-business customers.

I used to make up excuses. I thought it made me feel better and not so weird. I used to say it's for my dad who collects coins. Or for a school project. Something different each time. Now I just tell the truth and I'm glad I do. The last teller I got 2 boxes from was excited and said she's a collector too, and she showed me some stuff she found that day. Tellers don't really care, honestly. Be honest and you will feel better, and you might meet some cool tellers who collect as well.

Thanks for the advice. I went to a boa by my work and they were very nice. I went through my first five rolls of cents last night. I found one LWC so far.
