Poll Question
In preparation for an article I'm writing on collecting and the business of dealers, I would enjoy getting your input on what coin dealers mean to you. I have tried to best segment the possibilities as I see them, but please feel free to add anything I may have missed--thanks! Question: What is your most important reason for visiting a coin dealer? Choose a statement from the list below that best fits you.

No dealers in my area. I stick to ebay and roll hunting -- only go to dealers when I'm traveling and they happen to be (or I make them) "on the way."

Although I buy most of my coins from ebay sellers or via this forum - no coin dealers locally here - I emptied my pockets at the last coin show in town!

I just started this year and have been to two dealers. Both times it was with the intent to "pick their brain", to learn as much about coins as I can. I did purchase a little bit from both of them, in repayment for their answering my many questions.

I buy from dealers, ebay and here. The dealer I buy from the most is a great guy who will call if he gets in something I may like. I feel dealers are the best if you have access to them as you can make a better decision with the coin in hand rather than from a picture. And you have the option to impulse buy. On the other hand, ebay is usually cheaper. I tend to buy mint sets and mint packaged products from ebay as you can be fairly sure of what you are going to get.

Can you pretty much trust any established store front coin dealer?

I buy my coins from either shows or ebay. I have been doing this for some time now and have no need for a dealer.

Coinage- I hate to say this, but no, you can't. You should be able to, but unfortunately that is not the case. I have been in many coin shops and there are some good ones but there are also some very bad ones. If you can find one with a dealer you know you can trust based on some past experiences and good word of mouth from other collectors in your area stick with them. Of course all I have to go on is my personal experience, and obviously I haven't even been to 5% of the shops out there but as with everything, buyer beware.

I buy mostly online, not just ebay. There are some good images of coins which maybe make it easier than looking through a glass to choose from, and almost any coin I want to find is available online someplace. When I go to a coin show, I need to be somewhat psyched up and mentally prepared with a general plan and budget. I also need to be well rested and focused at a coin show. I look for coins that jump out at me at coin shows from the cases and trays. I always figured if I end up putting them up for sale they'll jump out at a potential buyer as well someday. ebay and online is much more relaxed but sometimes the coin is a bit of a disappointment and others it comes in the mail better than expected. Works out OK. ( about half and half so that's a wash ) I voted eBay because there weren't combo choices. There are two dealers in my area with a good selection but I just don't like the atmosphere and snobby attitudes. No fun to be had, it's all about money there. I'm in it for fun. I'd sum my way of collecting up this way, I'm lazy collecting online and working hard at it at a coin show.

I selected "I know what I want, and simply visit dealers to select from their inventory: the more the better" which fits the closest but not exactly. My local dealer is the only coin dealer in the city of St. Louis(a few are in the surrounding county area). Unfortunately, his B&M would probably not survive as a coin shop much like all the others that have gone out of business. He has a thriving bullion business that allows him to also operate a coin shop and the best feature of the shop is the Monday night bid board. For those not familiar with the concept of a bid board, it is a membership only auction($5/year) and you are assigned a number. About 60-75 lots per week are hung on a pegboard and you write your number with a bid on the card attached to the coin. Members can submit four lots per week with a 10% commission and the shop supplies the rest. The shop stays open later on Mondays for the bid board and the bidding ends at 7pm but the action is a bit fast and furious those last few minutes It has been a great source of material specifically for my collection(over half my MS Franklin set came from the bid board in a two year period), the occasional oddball item that I never knew existed(neutron irradiated dime from ORNL), and really cheap stuff for resale(most of the items in my recent sales listing came from the bid board). Some of the more popular items command strong money but it is not uncommon to walk away with four or five coins under Greysheet bid. The way I see it, I have access to 60-75 coins a week for purchase at usually a much lower than retail price. The variety is much better than you would see in a run-of-the-mill dealer's cases and in fact the variety is better than what the owner offers in his own cases The coins are available for viewing up to two weeks ahead of time so it is also ripe for cherrypicking. Cheap coins and cherrypicking is all fine and dandy, but the real enjoyable part is getting to socialize with the old-timers every Monday(one of them has a complete Large Cent collection 1793 wreath to 1857, all of them fine or better including the 1793s and 1799 ) and the Christmas party(which was this evening) with assorted barley sodas, deer sausage, 7 layer mexican dip, shrimp n'sauce, and various other finger food items. Simply put, it is kinda like Cheers- a place where everybody knows your name(we don't have a Norm though).

There are some really good dealers where I live. Ultimately, it's up to you to be an intelligent informed buyer! Regardless of where you buy coins from! Know as much as possible about the type of coin(s) you want to buy before you buy them. It is an advantage to be able to physically inspect a coin before you buy it. "Buy the coin, not the holder" This advantage does also apply to coin shows, and you may be able to bargain more there versus a dealer (even if it's the local dealer's table at the show!). It must be admitted that you can get some great deals on ebay if you are a careful knowledgeable shopper. In certain cases, even if you have access to several good dealers, ebay may be the only place to buy a particular coin. This forum has been a great help to me, to be an intelligent coin buyer!

I buy from dealers I know, because I can sit down and look at stuff without having to guess at how it looks, which is the case almost all the time online.
It helps to "know" people too, as you can get better deals and access to things not available to most.
In other words, for the poll option I would have to go with the raw coins in their own grades options.

I voted for the fourth one, with the addition that I try to support all the local coin dealers who are also members of my coin club, even if they don't have much in stock that I'm interested in. Fortunately, at the moment most of them normally do.

Lately I buy mostly from ebay. There is one dealer close to me. However, I have quit going to his shop because he never has anything new and doesn't seem to care. So I have quit going and have started calling him on the phone to inquire if he has gotten any Lincoln's since the last call and the answer is always no. I find ebay to be a good source as long as I'm patience. A Lot of people over bid on the coins. I also attend a monthly coin show in Atlanta. Tom

I prefer to buy raw coins. I'm lucky to have an excellent dealer in Little Rock in both stock and knowledge. It's easy to stop by a get supplies I need.
But, I do buy most of my coins via internet some e-Bay, but mostly specialty internet dealers.
