So I stumbled across a 1966 Red Book I inherited several years ago and was looking through it today. I thought I would share what you could purchase some of the key dates for back then in uncirculated condition. The 1966 RedBook would have come out in 1965. 1965 Graysheet prices for those Lincolns, Mercury, and the Morgan were 1909 S $85 1909 SVDB $275 1914 D $685 Mercury 1916 D $700 Morgan 1893 S no price listed The 1976 Graysheet (closest I have to the 74 RedBook) cent prices were 1909 S $67.50 1909 SVDB $205 1914 D $530 1973 and 76 prices for the next two Mercury 1916 D $900 $1,350 1916 SLQ none $1,500 1921 SLQ none $157.50 1927 S SLQ none $780 Morgan 1893 S $15,000 $18,000 1978 Graysheet Lincolns 1909 s Unc. $70.00 1909 s vdb Unc. $250.00 1914 d Unc. $525.00 1916 d Mercury Unc. $1485.00 1916 SLQ Unc. $1700.00 1921 SLQ Unc. $185.00 1927 S SLQ Unc.$875.00 1893 S Morgan Unc. $18,500.00! Very interesting! It's neat to see how coin values change over time, especially with regards to inflation.
Out of curiosity, what is the 1950-D nickel listed at in those books? From my understanding it saw quite a price bubble from the late 50s through the 60s.

The value in the book for an uncirculated 1950d was $26.00 in 1966.

It is fun to occationally look up prices of coins a long time ago. I have all of the Red Books from the first, 1947 edition, to present. Once in a while I'll open that first one to see how much money I've made on some of my coins.

1963 blue book all 4 Stella's proof $32,500. These books can be found on ebay for $1.00 to $5.00 every one should get one it is a blast. 1895 proof Morgan $1,100. I have a 77 blue book and interestingly no prices on the Stella's and the 1895 proof Morgan was still affordable at $3,000. |

I've kept a 1960's blue book around to look up mintages. The prices are pretty low, especially for gold.
I've also kept a few 1990's Coin Worlds around. I use them to index coin values over the last 25 years. Generally cc coins have appreciated enough to keep pace with inflation. But other coins haven't, especially commemoratives. Knowing that, I could pretty well guess that buying modern proof sets was a bad idea. Same with high mintage coins, especially hole-fillers in popular series.
