1859 Large Cent 9 Over 6 Variety- 2 Versions?

myskchem New Member Canada 8 Posts	Posted 02/17/2015 12:34 pm I recall someone mentioned there are 2 versions of the 9 over 6 punch in the 1859. (i have the Haxby rev I7 ) Anyone know of another less published version? Report this Post to the Staff

DEVLEC Pillar of the Community Canada 3234 Posts	Posted 02/17/2015 10:31 pm Next to impossible to make that W9 over 8 mistake..the inner loop is low in this very tough variety.. The inner loop speaks for itself...just like the 1859 DP 9..#5 has a loop much higher up in that 9 loop. The holder on the one that I bought had it labeled incorrectly as an 1859 DP 9..#5. okiecoiner Pillar of the Community Canada 5596 Posts	Posted 02/18/2015 04:29 am myskchem pointed out 2 of the markers other than the 9 itself, but there are others. For type I, there is a triple/quad repunch visible in the notch of the C in Canada, slight R/P of the T in Gratia R stem, D/C on upper right serif on N in Canada and bottom left The type 1 has to have the D/C at 12. The type 2 has the same specific abrupt vine break at 2, but has no D/C at 12 and a nicely offset 5/5. The 9/8's can't be confused with any regular 1859, since the font of the 9 was a larger and fatter punch to obliterate or mostly hide the underlying 8 in the working die. The font used for the 9 in the 9/8's was taller, rounder and wider. Report this Post to the Staff
