I am currently working on 2 boxes of halves. Box one didn't have anything interesting. Box 2 gives me lots of proofs. My question is, can you tell if a proof is silver just by looking at the rim or do you have to weight each one?

You can tell by just checking the rim.

Modern silver proofs (1992 to date), like those from 1964 and earlier, are 90% silver.

If you find a proof half dollar from 1968, 1969, or 1970, it will be 40% silver. Also, they are still a clad coin (by design) and the edge will show a (typically) darker copper core. This can be confused with a toned pure copper core, so it is best to check the dates.

the tissue test is helpful. Place a facial tissue over the coin, and a silver coin still looks bright and a clad coin looks darker. Follow the link to an example.

I completely forgot about the tissue test.
A silver proof will have a white rim similarly to pre 1965?

And thanks, Fuzzy, for the tissue test advice. Didn't know that.

Keep plugging away at the half boxes, you'll eventually find upgrades. I've been searching half boxes for about 1 1/2 years and already have a complete set of clad proofs from 1971-2013. Most of them are in pretty good condition considering they've been in circulation, but there are a few that I'm hoping to upgrade as time goes on. Many of the years between 1971-2013 I have multiples of that are in pretty nice shape.
