I'm mostly just curious but can anyone tell me about these? How do you tell adjustment marks from scratches? What is the purpose of chop marks? If anyone has any pics of these that I'd like to see them.
G'day, adjustment marks look like they've been made with a file, which is in fact how they are made: so the scratches are parallel, and their depth will be consistent. In the case of French gold coins, I have read that the "stries d'ajustage" are made on the planchet before striking.
Chop marks are usually seen on silver coins. They authenticate that the coin is silver, and correct weight. They are most commonly seen on Spanish Dollars and similar. The chop marks were added by merchants. Presumably, staff could not accept a coin unless the boss had already authenticated it. Of course, forgers can add chop marks too. If you search "chop" on The-Bay, you'll get plenty of hits, and then you can see pics. eg: Item number 200211750805.
