Quote: Really? Proof V-Nickels are okay, but I would not call them "gorgeous." Bill , With all do respect, I said gem proof NOT PR-62 . This thread is getting a little hairy , which just proves every collector has a favorite coin sometimes different from other collectors . we're known to take pride in our favorite denominations and type ,as well to downplay the coins we don't care for .

That 1909 V nickel is not not PR-62. It's PR-66, CAM, and it looks better in person that in my photos. Some coins just don't come out well, especially those with original toning. The Liberty nickel design is flat and dull. The best part about it is the head of Ms. Liberty and that's not great. The best looking nickel is the Buffalo by far.

Definitely Morgan dollars I actually agree - the Morgan dollars are a lot uglier than the Peace dollars (though neither are anywhere near as ugly as the Trade dollars). And here I thought I was the only one who would "go there" when I did back on page one.

I will never like Peace dollars for their low relief (especially on the reverse). As well as Franklins. I don't know, I see a lot of people who enjoy them, but they just look dull and unappealing to me

I never cared much for the design of the 2 cent coin. When I was a YN I could not figure out which was 'heads' and which was 'tails'. I do have a few Barber coins, so I showed them to my grandson. His reaction says it all...

Not a fan of the Peace dollar design myself. Liberty on this coin looks like a dumbstruck party girl wearing a Jesus Christ Superstar outfit.

Call it blasphemy but I have an issue with the $10 Indian, she looks like her mouth is agape, the facial sculpt just doesn't hold up for me. It also just feels a bit plain on the obverse. The Peace dollar doesn't really wow me either, and the same open mouth, but I do prefer the facial sculpt on it, despite the low relief, that rayed crown is neat and the hair looks nice, when the strike doesn't ruin it.

Surprised no one picked the matron-head large cent. Definitely an unattractive version of Lady Liberty.

One reason is because, in a departure from from the unrealistic, big-head, thick-neck liberty figure designs like the Morgan dollar, Miss Liberty on the Peace dollar looks much more realistic -- and for a very good reason. For those who don't know, Teresa Cafarelli, wife of Peace dollar designer Anthony de Francisci, was used as a model for the Peace dollar. Here's a photo of her, and I think she was quite pretty. Admittedly, I think the Peace dollar figure would have looked better if Anthony de Francisci didn't flatten out his wife's nose.

As a foreigner I'm a bit reluctant to criticize US coin designs! I agree with what someone said about Liberty with the stringy hair on the 1793 Wreath reverse cent. I like both the Morgan and Peace dollars and the Saint-Gaudens gold coins. The V nickel and Barber coins aren't among my personal favorites, but I wouldn't call them ugly... I am now going to be really controversial and say that the classic Gobrecht Liberty Head obverse on US gold coins is one of my least favorite US coin designs. Her eye seems to be in the wrong place, she looks like she's had a bad perm, and the design doesn't fill the coin properly - the portrait always looks as though it ought to be shifted a few mm over to the left... I still like the design, but I think Longacre's Liberty portrait on the double-eagle was far superior, and it amazes me that the Gobrecht design remained in use for such a long time.

NO COIN IS UGLY!!! Having said that, sure, we collectors have our favorites. Mine is the Barbers. But what deity has declared that "Liberty" must be female? Look at the "Mercury" dimes. Mercury is a MALE GOD!!!! Oh sorry, "Winged Liberty Head." Really is this all we have to complain about?
