Hello All Came across this coin, you can see how badly it is stained. So what is your guess? Does NGC not care about staining (or toning for that matter) as long as the strike is perfect and still grade it as a 70, regardless of its unsightly appearance? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder? Or do you think that the coin became stained inside the slab after being graded? If so, does the same happen to slabbed coins who became toned after grading? Look at the edge or rim of this coin, it almost looks like a file was put to it or placed in a dryer for a few tumbles. If so, I had thought that a slabbed coin was airtight and would stay in the same condition as it was received for grading. ? Instead, is it possible for any staining or toning to appear after being slabbed and can get worse as time goes on? https://www.greatcollections.com/Co...ue-NGC-MS-70personally, I usually do not care much for toning altho I have seen a few toned coins which were quite attractive. However, this staining business tho seems like an entirely different animal to me and is decidedly unattractive. mike

Some types of bullion silver are especially prone to staining or developing ugly milk spots and haze even inside a slab. Storage inside a slab does not mean eternal preservation in pristine state; careful storage of the slab itself is crucial. For a rather expensive example, a 1963 PCGS PR70 Memorial cent developed some spots while inside the slab and PCGS, in accordance with their grading guarantee, bought the coin back for 40 grand. It would have been hilarious and laughable to see that coin be traded for tens of thousands of dollars for years to come, just because the slab reads 70 while the coin really isn't anymore.

Quote: Or do you think that the coin became stained inside the slab after being graded? It definitely got the milk spots after being graded. The Canadian mint is famous for milk spots on silver. All the mints have a problem with it now a days, some mints are worse than others though. Quote: If so, I had thought that a slabbed coin was airtight and would stay in the same condition as it was received for grading. ? Nothing is air tight. PCGS slabs are water resistant which is the closest we have to an air tight slab, but the cost would be astronomical to make an actual air tight vacuum slab.

Now here also only a 2 year old coin, but is ungraded, a silver 2016 angel with what I consider attractive toning. Almost looks purposely colorized red in the toned areas. Wonder what makes some coins tone only a deep red like this one and others show colors all over the map. Would the color(s) depend on the specific content or type of the silver and / or the environment it is stored in? https://www.ebay.com/itm/2016-isle-...AOSw0O9a~4fewhat's unclear to me is why is only one side of the coin appear to be toned, no red toning on the other side. ? The reason I wonder is because I was involved in a project that took stainless steel bolts. After years, some look as good or unblemished as the day they were made, while other stainless bolts corroded (salt air) within months. So I say there is stainless, and then there is stainless.

Assuming that wasn't some kind or reflection that was intentionally done
