1983 Lincoln Cent Lamination Error?

mikep Valued Member United States 322 Posts	Posted 11/17/2008 10:05 pm Hi all. I found this cent in a bank roll. I'm thinking it's a lamination error, but not sure. The damaged part of the coin shows raised letters and doesn't look like post mint damage. There are stress cracks and it's slightly elongated. What happened? coindexter Pillar of the Community United States 869 Posts	Posted 11/18/2008 12:03 am The letters on a coin are the strongest and thickest part of the coin and would be the last item to completely flatten out. From the reed marks(see pics)on the coin shows some kind of tool or vise was used to pinch it. Also copper is a vary soft metal and will spread and stretch. Have you seen a elongated coin before? foundinrolls Pillar of the Community United States 3507 Posts	Posted 11/18/2008 12:50 am Hi, The coin gets the "Clunker" award. It's damage. It looks like it spent some time on a parking lot. As always, it's not always possible to tell what caused the damage but it is indeed just damage. Seriously though, if you lay a plated cent on a board or on a piece of thick leather and whack it with a hammer....this coin is what you get.
