Sometimes I ended up winning coins at auction that I haven't analyzed as well as I should. Doing it by iPhone is always a risk. This old lady doesn't bear scrutiny all that well, and I'm not sure I can sell her for what I paid. How would you grade her, and would you take her home?

AU-55 and I wouldn't take her home only because I already have an MS64 example. Cell phones can be dangerous when misused...

Yep, I wasn't real happy with this coin, especially at $121. I'll be lucky to get half of what I paid. I find that 1891-S normally sells pretty briskly. It's not rare with a mintage of 5,296,000, but its less common than the Philly or New Orleans issues of the same year, and often better struck. I could see from the auction photos on my iPhone that the strike was solid, and the rim ding didn't bother me. But I did not notice those short-but-deep scratches around the nose & lips.

That's about as good as you are going to get for an AU-55 coin. Nice residual luster and not too banged up. An attractive piece that looks more like a 58.

Thanks for the encouragement. It goes up on eBay this evening, damned with faint praise, perhaps: "1891-S Morgan dollar $1 NGC AU55: Solid, affordable specimen" "Appealing, and a very decent strike, with some contact marks that keep the price low."
