Hello,

Found this medal today, although I haven't bought it.

I think it's a 1650-1760 pilgrim/religious medal; this is based on the two or so examples I have found online.

I am curious to hear from those that collect these how bad the bronze disease is considering age, etc. Although I am pretty sure I already know the answer....

Thanks!

It might not be bronze disease, although if it's powdery, it is. Bronze disease doesn't care about age. Verdigris, on the other hand, is stable and protective.

For sure that is an old pendant—you can see part of the remnant loop at the top. Can you please help with spelling out the inscription on the other side. I think it starts NO SANGVIS, but can't make out exactly why there is no blood being conferred.

Hello,

I bought this medal today and after doing some research I think it is a carmelite order medallion from circa 1700-1750 (some sources say 1650-1780).

My questions is whether this medal should be cleaned and oiled or left as is? The green deposits are not chalky to the touch, nor fingernail scrap, nor a q-tip brush.

Thoughts? Thank you!

@roma, best practice is to only have one thread per coin so I have merged your two threads.

No prob at all. Also, you will note that since you have pretty good certainty on what it is, I've moved the combined thread over to the proper subforum.

With regard to cleaning, I would leave this coin as-is. Since the green isn't chalky, I don't think it is bronze disease.
