This year, RCM release the black and gold sea otter coin as the third one in the black and gold series.

But I have a feeling that, this one destroy the whole series. It's difficult to describe the feeling. Just that, the colour of black and gold, integrated together in a tai chi pattern, give me a feeling of power and flexibility. The first one is the horse, it fits this feeling perfectly. The second one is the wolf, it also fits this feeling. But the third one ... it miss the power part. That's why I feel that it ruin the whole series ....

Yeah, I understand. The Wolf is a great looking coin.....the Sea Otter somewhat underwhelming.

If you were a clam, you might fear the sea otter. Just Sunday humor...

The good side is, I don't need to spend more money to collect this series. Especially, the horse one is super expensive now.

Of the three in the series, the wolf had the nicest design and if I didnt know about it and missed it initially I would consider it even at current secondhand values. The otter design looks off in this photo so I'd have to see it more closely in person but I can understand it doesn't have the same impact as the other two.and isn't as well designed.

In any series, there are going to be designs more liked than others. It might just be me but since it is a collector coin, the mintage of the otter coin is what will "destroy" the series...

The mintage is also another hurting factor. Based on my observation, the design is more important. If the design is good, even a higher mintage is acceptable, because there would be more people want to buy it. If the design is not that good, then a lower mintage will not make it a rare coin.

These all have low mintages for general collectability, but not very low to be rare where you will not be able to get one. Only 6,500 of the Otter Black and White, however even less 4,500 of the wolf and the first release of the horse was extremely limited to only 3,500. If they were reversed and the wolf had 6,500 and was the third release yes I would agree it would be still far below the potential demand due to the design, but these are low enough that even with a poor design they will certainly sell due to those who wish to collect the entire series and further increase the value of the earlier examples in doing so.
