Yes, this is definitely what would be known in Australia as a "cud" (everyone else calls them "die chips" unless they're touching the rim), and a fairly major one. Well, three cuds, if we include the piece on the left bar of the "5" and the piece between the leftmost claws. I'd also agree that with this many bits broken off the die, this is quite a deteriorated die. But I'm not seeing anything qualifying as a variety on the obverse.
