Hi. I'm new to the forum. I've been coin roll hunting half dollars for a few years now. Started out just looking for silver. Then I learned there's much more and better half's to look for. I found this half in 2020. Finally submitted it this summer at the Chicago national. You probably noticed it says 1971 in the title. Before I submitted this coin, PCGS had certified zero No FG 1971 D, and the same with NGC. I learned that PCGS doesn't even recognize No FG on a 71, vs the more known 72, 82, 83. I felt my best chance to get the designation would be to submit to NGC, and they didn't disappoint. I sent this along with four 72's and an 83, and they all got the designation. There are around 150 certified 72 D No FG between these two grading companies. So what do you guys think about this 1/1 1971? Despite roughly double the mintage on 71 vs 72, I see this coin as being at least 150x more rare, and zero before this one. Check the population number yourself and you'll see what I'm talking about. Curious on your thoughts and is this technically a discovery coin? What would you do with it?

If Nickel's league is out for holydays it is OK. I come late on this very interesting coin.

We have a combinations of the Hubs design. R reverse it is an 1972 and the O observe it is a very clear 1970. How happened? Mishmash on Dies production. Congrat for this coin. I never see one before. It is not only the FG but also show that the translon 1971-1972 they at the Mint reuse the hubs.

i discovered an unreported half dime variety. I elected to take it to auction.

as far as I see it you have 3 options for a coin like this.

keep it. its hard to argue against this one. its probably always going to be one of the better finds you come across. you are never going to get it for cheaper and its the rarest coin possible to own with only 1 copy known. its like the crown jewel of a collection in a lot of ways.

sell it privately. you could sell/trade it to a dealer or collector for an agreed upon price. you get money now and you can probably trade for other cool coins. you will see it sold for more later if you keep tabs on it. the dealer bought it to make money after all. if you know the top end collector this can be a great way to make a friend and top end collectors pay well for things they want.

sell it at auction. this is the only sure fire way to get the top dollar. it will sell for all the money that anyone would possibly pay for it. you run the risk of getting way less than you personally value the item. auctions take a long time. think months of lead time.

if you choose to sell a discovery coin I think the time to do so is right after the discovery. the hype will never be bigger and the coin can only become more common. something to consider is how you will feel if someone comes up with multiple copies of them in higher grade than yours. now that the coin is listed its possible more show up.
I collect low grade large cents. I currently have >230 Sheldon varieties and >235 middle date Newcomb varieties.
