Hi all, Perhaps eight or nine years ago, I bought this litra from Naxos (Sicily) from Lanz Numismatik. I realized sine then that this seller was not fully reliable, and since there are many fakes of this type around , I am afraid that mine could be one of them. What do you think? Best   |

Me and my little brain did a search on Numista and didn't find anything. However, there was some coins with grapes on the back but with a better looking obverse. I'm inclined to say its a fake. BUT I am a neophyte at such things so wait for the experts to chime in. Again, my little brain is no expert.  Joanne Edited by Empty_Pockets

To describe Lanz as less than reliable is a bit extreme I think Have they sold coins of dubious origin ? As they sell a very impressive quantity of ancient coins it seems quite likely that a few fakes will have slipped into the picture My own experience with Lanz is but one sestertius of Vespasian A Judaea Capta that I suspected might be well worth a bid ( ebay !) As it was the coin was far superior than the seller pics indicated It set me back $400 But I have zero regrets |

I think your reverse may be a die match for at least one of the two coins I linked:  (Left, Copyright Leu Numismatik; right Copyright Gorny & Mosch) Edited by tdziemia

In my experience, Lanz was not very reliable. It sold fakes, some of them really obvious, and once I bought from it a tooled coin without any mention of tooling in the description. But perhaps this time I was lucky!

It's the same lighting
Same exposure
Same angle
Same lens
Conclusion ?
It's the same photo

If you have a record of buying the coin, from Lanz, that they will recognize, send it off to NGC to be graded. If they say it is a fake and refuse it, I think Lanz will have to refund you and if not, whatever the coin is, it will be ready to sell in the NGC slab. My opinion of course, thus just a suggestion.

Thanks for this suggestion. I am not sure this can work because Lanz does not exist any more. It has ceased all activity. If it is fake, it will remain one of the two I own (it is normal, probably for a collection that steered 15 years ago), the second being this one   |
