Finally picked up an example of the first-year of the $3 odd-denomination type. One thing, I noted from my research is that the '54 has the word 'DOLLARS' written in a much smaller font than in most other years. Not gonna lie, I kind of wish the coin had a D mintmark as this was the only year that the Dahlonega Mint issued the $3 denomination. Let me know what you think this grades (not what you think the TPG graded it). As usual, the TPG grade in 48. No peeking at the sale results as it is easy to find online. Thanks! lighting is not that great making more of challenge to assess the surfaces. I was always fascinated by the $3 coins. maybe AU58 or MS63. I'm leaning towards the AU side  |

Beautiful example of this odd ball denomination. Difficult to gauge the surfaces due to the lighting used. I'm thinking that I maybe see some light rub on the design high points - so AU58 slider. Or maybe I'm wrong - and it's a solid MS63 or so. |

A TPG would probably give it an AU grade. |

All of the TPGs do pretty well with this denomination. Most of the survivors will fall into the AU-58 to MS-63 window, Below AU-58, not many have good luster and above MS-63 requires nearly pristine fields. This coin has the luster, but quite a bit of light contact in the fields, so it's in that grade range.
The central devices are nice. The strike is about average. There is only one deeper knock, on the SE central reverse field to the right of the "4" in the date. The flat spots on the cheek, hair over the ears, feather tips, and lower curls don't have corresponding flatness on the higher portions of the reverse. That suggests strike and cabinet rub, rather than heavy circulation. The light surface scratches are probably evidence of light use in commerce, but that doesn't preclude an MS grade.
On balance, from the photos I'm seeing enough luster and not enough evidence of circulation on the reverse to push this one into the MS-62 camp.

Hard to tell what marks are on the holder and what is one the coin. This one looks MS to me. MS-62

I appreciate Fortcollins' remarks. I also see the apparent rub on the hair curls but no comparable friction on the reverse. Ample luster therefore suggests mint state with the faint hairlines on both sides likely limiting the grade to MS-62. Nice example!
