The weight on this is so light what could it be. When I tap it with my finger it sounds hollow and thin. It looks like some type of weld has been done to it

Whatever it is it's a damaged nickel.

We can speculate all day on how it got to this state, but unless you were there when it was put together we'll never know for sure.

How it got damaged doesn't really matter.

It's a squirting nickel. I got the remains of one in change a few years ago. Notice the hole in the O of OF.
