2006 D Colorado Quarter, PMD Or Missing Cupronickel Layer?

Roller42 Valued Member United States 104 Posts	Posted Today 2H 41M ago Found this one in the same box as the 2011 D Glacier quarter I just uploaded. Colorful Colorado, indeed! It looks like a copper quarter. It appears to be missing the outer cupronickel layer. My gut says it is PMD, maybe acid treated or something. It also appears to be slightly smaller than a quarter and there is very little evidence of reeding on the edge. I wonder if there is some acid that can dissolve nickel but leaves copper alone? Weight is 5.68 g, which seems weird if there were outer layers missing. Just another oddball CRH find and I look forward to opinions! Report this Post to the Staff

Quote: anodic (reverse) electrostripping using a sulfuric acid electrolyte can dissolve a nickel layer off a copper substrate without significantly attacking the underlying copper. If this was the case I would expect it to weigh less. At 5.68 it's almost right on spec. Maybe a casino quarter that has been copper plated? Report this Post to the Staff
jbuck Moderator United States 192741 Posts	Posted Today 2H 13M ago Keep in mind it is not a nickel layer. It is a cupro-nickel layer. The outside layers are alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel. I doubt it is plated. More likely it is just toned. I have seen plenty of coppery toned clad coins. I like them. For example, you can pull a very thin layer of copper to the alloy surface by heating red hot with a blowtorch and then quenching in methanol (not recommended, IMO). dL0vs_GptcM Report this Post to the Staff
