Trying To Determine If A Gold Coin Has Been Cleaned

dom Valued Member United States 265 Posts	Posted 04/17/2011 08:16 am Hi All, Yesterday, I had some of my coins that I had not played with in a while, and I became reaquainted with a 1904 double eagle that I purchased years ago at the FUN show when gold was $600/oz. I had sent it in to ANACS several years ago and it came back AU55 details, cleaned.I remember back then examining the coin and could not find some of the usual things I would find with silver. I feel confident with silver coins but due to the paucity of gold coins in my collection, not so confident. But any way, I had my loop out and for the life of me, there was some wear and signs of circulation but could not find hairlines or evidences of wiping etc,. I have a cleaned $3 gold piece and all I can say it that it's just plain obvious, especially on the reverse. Different parts of the reverse have different reflective qualities and the luster has been changed. Appears to have been wiped. Doesn't sound like this applies to your $20 Liberty though. If you wanted to take the chance, try sending to another TPGS. Might even come back with a higher grade. Report this Post to the Staff
