I've done a little half dollar searching so far and came across these two. One is 1977 and the other is 1982. I just got my USB microscope so I thought I'd post them to see what you think. No FG? On both? Where is it and what do I look out for? I'm just learning some of this stuff and want to develop a discerning eye.

Of course! I cant really tell but I guess these are very very light FGs if you can tell from the magnified pics. I'm assuming they don't command a premium and I should just spend them. I may save one for reference.

GerrodH on the lower one I can see what appears to be a small raised bump just below the drumstick. On the upper one there is just the faintest of a bump where the FG should be.
That being said if it wasn't for you microscopic enhanced pictures and John1's assertions I would be in the count of those that would say the FG is missing. At first I was wondering what John1 was seeing but when looked at a half on my desk and then at your pictures I could make something out.

Really faint but could be from a Grease Filled Die. Sort of like the stupid 1922 Cent. I highly doubt that this would be worth as much though. |

If there is an FG in either of these coins, it is so faint that I would consider both to be "no FG". But I have never seen a real "no FG" coin or picture, so I cannot say for sure. Under this magnification, they are not obvious.

Thanks John for the great links. Based on what info these provided I would have to say that these are not a no FG
But would look for the tell tale die scratches described. I now know that the no Fgs that I thought I had are like these.
