Though my specialization in Newfoundland coins commands my attention and budget, I was gripped by the toning of this 1858 5 cent purchased from a jewelry store for $40. It looks to me like an old cleaning that sat in a Whitman folder for some years.

How would you grade this coin? Was it a good buy?

Nice coin! Well worth the $40 spent.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

I'd say VF-35 Cleaned and at $40, a very good buy.

I think you've hit the nail on the head with "looks to me like an old cleaning (perhaps old 'dipping') that sat in a Whitman folder for some years."

Still, a very nice coin and well worth the money.
