1981-S Proof Quarter - "Uni" Variety Or Minting/Strike Issue

I looked through about 7 different 1981 proof sets this morning and I noticed, and thought it peculiar that on the reverse, in the word "UNITED", the N and I are always touching one another. As in:

1981-S-Proof-Quarter---

I thought that was normal until I ran across this one:

1981-S-Proof-Quarter---

Is there any significance to this? What would be the difference in the minting processes?

There are Type 1 and Type 2 sets for that year but I thought that just had to do with the mint marks....maybe you are on to something because they definitely look like different reverses. I am not all that knowledgeable in proof sets though.

Looks like a heavy die polishing make the letters smaller on the second image. I found one that must have received some die damage and when they polished the die down the letters were reduced in size.
