Proof Nut Valued Member Canada 393 Posts	Posted 01/29/2014 9:00 pm While searching rolls of quarters for U.S. coins a friend recently found an unusual looking 2006 Nebraska coin that appeared quite flashy and seemed to be missing the telltale copper edge. Usually American coins stand out and aren't attracted to a magnet, yet this one does ever so slightly. I'm thinking it's an off metal strike or it is somewhat lacking the normal amount of copper as it's mostly magnetic close to the edge. publius Pillar of the Community United States 807 Posts	Posted 01/29/2014 9:15 pm Wrong planchet is a possibility, but I wouldn't discount nickel plating. Nickel by itself is ferromagnetic, while cupronickel (the outer layer of clad coins) is not. Report this Post to the Staff

But as mention some TV hucksters are selling gold/platinum State Quarters for a premium. People realize they were sold something not collectable and spend it, or the coins are stolen and just cashed in. Even proof coins get back into circulation. Proof coins are very shiny. Compared to a business strikes, even a camera can show you the difference. So check for the "S" mint mark and let us know what you find. Report this Post to the Staff
