Hello. I am going through some old Chinese coins from a family estate. Usually I can find the coin in the Krause publications, but I have trouble with the year. Specifically, I have a China Feng Tien Province 10 Cash coin catalog Y# 89. It lists 4 possible dates (1903 - 1906) but I don't know how to read the coin to determine the date. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hello and welcome.

The coins are not dated numerically, but dated using the Chinese 60-year celestial-stems earthly-branches cyclical calendar. On this coin, it is the two characters at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock that give the date. Krause has a cyclical date conversion table at the front of the China section; this website has the same table in interactive format, with examples on coinage. For an example on your specific coin type, the date on the one pictured in Krause and on the NGC database page converts to 1904.
