I am definitely new at this, but this penny seems odd to me. The rim is too high and seems to obscure part of the date.

Never heard of a Dryer Coin? Is it what it sounds like? One that went through a washer/dryer cycle?

Looks like a dryer c oin. Dryer Coins get lost in the dryer and roll for a while folding the rim in. It could be someone started to make a ring too.
Rest in Peace

I took care of that for you.

Yes, that's the most probable case. I don't imagine the rim being perfecty raised like that, unless it was intentionally done. But what do I know, it could be a Dryer Coin.

Hard to believe a Dryer Coin. The rims should be flat.
