i recently got this penny and at first glance I thought it had a little Machine Doubling on the last 4 but while taking pictures I noticed that it was clearly not a 4 but a 3 under the 4. is this even possible since we only had steal 1943 s pennies?

To my knowledge all 1944s we minted on copper planchets. It looks like mayb loose die error on the last 4, but if it was a 1943 s on a copper or a 1944 on steel then you have something

It looks like a well placed hit to me. Some damage done to the second 4 making it appear to be a mint error.
Look closely at the width of the vertical bar in the second 4 compared to the first 4, it is noticeably narrower.

with cwb. The last 4 took a hit to the upright that slightly flattened it and pushed metal toward the rim. It is just PMD, I'm afraid.

There were a few 1944 steel cents. Probably about the same number as the 1943 copper cents. I have images, but my image host is still not working....
