Question On Hairlines... - Coin Community Forum

jdheyne Pillar of the Community United States 772 Posts	Posted 03/07/2006 11:10 am If a coin has hairlines, does the automatically mean that it has been cleaned? One of the coins I have is an UNC Morgan, that is very very sharp, but has some hairlines on the face. I find it hard to believe such a great looking coin has been cleaned... it still has the original luster (or atleast I believe it is original... it does the "cartwheel" effect. Opinions? Those lines could be from rubbing against other coins or from having just the design cleaned or polished. There is no way to say without seeing pictures. Report this Post to the Staff

There's no way to know for sure without seeing the coin, observing its luster and checking on the hairlines -- how consistently do they flow in one direction, how much of the coin do they cover, et cetera.
