Get Ready For The Zinkel

And the dime, and the quarter....all coinage other than the dollar coins should be ENDED. Our government has inflated the value of coins in commerce away. Most people are using electronic transactions and the few of us old folks still using cash don't care much about getting coins back either (collector exception).

The mining, cost of production and time wasted by humans counting and moving heavy metal disks around in giant diesel spewing trucks is a travesty to mankind. Every year, MILLIONS of gallons of precious fuel are spent - wasting energy and polluting our environment all to shuffle around coins.

Here's a fun question!

How much gasoline is WASTED in every road vehicle from hauling around the extra weight of coins inside their cars?

Come on, EVERY car has coins inside it. I suspect a few more million gallons are wasted if you look at the additive effect of an extra pound or two on every single car in America.

My cent collection stops at 1982 bronze along with the 2009 unc and proof set bronze ones.

There is precedent for a country changing the composition of their 5 penny coin from CuNi to Zn.

Coins still have a role in society, mainly with vending machines. To function, coins need to be durable, recognizable (visually and by electronic signature), common, and small and light enough to handle easily.

Canada has a third of a century's experience with plated steel and bimetallic coinage. The EU has a quarter century's experience with bimetallic, Nordic Gold, and plated steel coinage. The US has almost two-thirds of a century's experience with cupro-nickel clad coinage. All work well in commerce.

Not all denominations are still useful. Inflation has made the smaller coins useless in Canada, the EU, and the US. It's well past time to end them. The bulkier coins such as US small dollars and half dollars won't circulate. It's well past time to end them.

What will circulate are functional coins. Canada's Loonie and Toonie circulate. The EU's ten, twenty, and fifty Eurocents coins circulate, aided by the presence of pay toilets as well as vending machines. The one and two Euro coins circulate. The US dime and quarter still have vending machine value.

What the US needs are small, light, circulating one and two dollar multimetallic or multilayer clad coins. Everything below the dime needs to go. Paper currency below the $5 needs to go. As inflation continues, the dime will need to go sooner and possibly the quarter eventually will also need to go. The US will eventually need a compact, light circulating clad fifty cent coin and eventually will also need a compact, light circulating five dollar coin.

US Dollar coins will not circulate as long as we keep printing paper notes.
That solution is obvious. Quit printing paper dollars!
And, simultaneously introduce a $2 coin.

Dollars ain't worth what they used to be.
