I started on this journey well over a decade ago. I roll hunt all the time so I have a lot of copper and a fair amount of LWCs. However I am missing pretty much ALL the rare ones to complete my set. Here's what I am missing..
1909-S VBD
1909-S
1910-S
1911-S
1912-S
1914-D
1922-plain (Have this one but it have verdigris so I'd like an upgrade)
1924-D
1931-S
I pretty much only exclusively buy silver and obtained a majority of this cent set through circulation. Sadly after a decade+, I just don't think I am going to find the last ones I need this way. I found a 1909-P VDB a while ago but I doubt I'm ever going to find the 09-S or 09-S VDB. How often are these coins counterfited? I was considering slabs for the remaining ones in case there are a lot of fakes out there but they are awfully expensive. Looking for any advice on the best, most cost effective way to finish this set. I would guess I would be OK in good to fine brown on most of these. I have quite a bit of AU/BU even in the 40's and 50's but no way I'm spending thousands on high grade of the most rare ones. This set would just feel good to finish and it seems like good timing with the 2025 being the last official business strike...

Unless you felt 100% certain of how to authenticate a raw key date I suggest you stick with slabbed examples even if you intend to crack them out. There are simply way too many convincing (to a novice eye) counterfeits out there. Quote:

Agree with all above--best to purchase the remaining coins. Slabbed is a good way to go. You might find 'raw' pieces from a reputable dealer at coin show.

Alright the journey has began. I was eyeing an au50 pcgs 1912-s but it had a carbon spot on Lincoln's head. I reached out to the seller and he gave me a good price on it so I bought it despite the carbon spot. It's a bit higher grade than I needed but that's ok. I'm waiting to receive it but I have 1 coin down!   Edited by LibertyEagle20

Well the seller reached out asking what else I needed so I also obtained a pcgs vf35 1911-s from him.   I have a feeling some of the others won't be so cheap and easy but I'm off to a good start..I think! |

But the pricier coins certainly run a greater risk of being faked. I posted my coin here on CCF, for expert eyes let it pass (or fail) as authentic. Maybe I was just lucky, and probably will go with slabbed going forward. But, sadly, even slabbed coin's authenticity are not as certain as even a few years ago. |

Well this started moving faster than expected. I'm finding prices across grades on a lot of these are pretty similar so I keep widening my search. I got some grade creep and ended up scoring the 09-s and 31-s in high AU. I think I'm going to be on hold for a bit though as I've blown most of my budget for now. I made offers much lower than asking and the sellers accepted! Once I get these I will post an update. Assuming everything shows up as expected, I only need the 09-s vdb,10-s,14-d,and 24-d now. I may forget about the 22 plain as that seems more like an error and prices are very high..
