I keep going back to my thoughts of eliminating all coinage except for the dime and, if they stop the $1 and $2 bills, smaller dollar and 2-dollar coins.
Eliminating the nickel (since it costs more than it is worth to make/distribute) and quarter (hard to make change for without the penny and nickel) as well as the half dollar (it has not been used regularly in 60 years) and the dollar coin (never well used in commerce in its current or larger forms regardless of its composition) would make the dime the workhorse.
With its value about that of the 1966 penny (and the 2026 dollar that of a 1966 dime) the current dime is really all we need. It is small enough to have a handful in pocket without being unwieldy.
In the future they could introduce a smaller dollar coin similar in size to a current nickel and a slightly larger/thicker $2 coin. Make all three of plated steel like the Canadians have done for years.
I suspect however that the end of coinage is closer to reality as to make the whole idea moot anyway.

Interesting proposals.  We just need to only issue a dime and dollar coin. Get rid of the one and two dollar bills. Crane can go pound sand. Maybe add a two dollar coin to the mix. Put Jefferson on it to satisfy those who hated to lose the nickel and two dollar bill.  |
