  This note was in a junk bin at my LCS. The banknote is a Japan 50 sen banknote, Pick #58, dated 1938, mundane and nearly worthless. However, I have transcribed the writing: (front) l/SGT A. Johnson 17 Park Crescent Romford, Essex, England (back) (signature) A. Johnson Liberated P. O. W. From Osaka, Japan Captured 26/12/41 Released 8/9/45 Note: Allies Surrendered to Japan in Hong Kong on 25 December 1941. Per Wikipedia, there were 5072 British Prisoners among the about 11,000 captives. I was wondering if I could find out anything about Mr. A. Johnson, such as his age and how long he lived after his release. Unfortunately, A. Johnson doesn't narrow it down much in the entire UK population, but there can't have been many men named A. Johnson in those 5000 who survived the camps. I found links to various online war records, but some of them have a paywall, and the rest gave no useful information. I'm not sure the significance of l/SGT. Are there different types of sergeant? 17 Park Crescent seems to be a nice house and in a nice location, from Google. Perhaps someone has access to or knows more ways to search for information.

Cool historic find. I bet there is a veterans organization in the UK that could help you track down the family.

Yes, it would be interesting to "close the loop" on this one. I never thought of contacting a veterans organization-that's a good idea.

It is Andrew Salmon and he is a Lance Sergeant. This is taken from the UK Roll of WWII Prisoners.  His records will not be available from the Archives at Kew until 2035. Edited by lettow

Fascinating. I would love to get a banknote with anyone's signature on it. One of the reasons I like used notes and the such. Excellent sleuthing you all. |
