Well okay I'm not actually planning on "cracking it" per se but I do have a 1916D Merc in a G6 soapbox and I'm considering a crossover at PCGS with a current grade minimal requirement. As much as it kills me to crack this coin in a soap, It seems PCGS coins command more than soaps overall...and I'm trying to get the most out of this PCGS membership and I would get the 40th anniversary label, gold shield. I don't really plan on selling it either way.
Am I crazy?

The old soapbox holders are still pretty desirable in my experience. However I agree with you a PCGS certified coin will likely bring in more than an ANACS certified one. I would suggest posting pictures in the grading forum and get opinions before sending anything in. The members here are really helpful and can probably give you a decent idea if it will make the grade at PCGS.
Personally - I probably wouldn't do it because the old ANACS soapbox is still a respected holder IMO. But if you're a member for PCGS and have submission privileges, I can certainly see why it would be appealing. Can you actually mail it in the ANACS slab and they will only crack it out if it crossgrades to G06 at PCGS? If so, that makes the risk a lot lower. I'd be nervous about cracking it out of the soapbox and having to send it in raw to PCGS, just in case in came back lower or "Details".

From what I understand it shouldn't be an issue submitting it in a soapbox for crossover, according to their website they'll even take ICG slabs for crossover consideration now which is crazy to me.You can submit it with a guarantee of the current grade, no details grades accepted, which is what I'm planning on doing I did upload the coin in question a while ago, I'll link it https://goccf.com/t/482702#4340531Edited by StackerBacker

I'd just leave it alone. If you really want a PCGS-graded example you should shop for an acceptable coin in your holder of choice and sell your current coin to help cover the cost. Problem solved!  |

If its in the old style slab without the bar code label, I think it is more desirable to leave it be.

If you aren't planning to sell it, and it's not a registry competition coin, then what's the draw? I guess TrueView pics to share with everyone, and a bigger payday down the road?
