I was recently browsing
ebay for 1885
V nickels and noticed this new listing. At first glance, something about the date caught my eye. Upon comparing the coin to the PCGS website, I noticed that the top bar of the "5" in the date seems fatter (i.e. thicker when measured from top to bottom) on this coin than on the example on PCGS's website. The tip of the top part of the "5" also seems to not stick out quite as far as the bottom loop, but on PCGS's website it does. It is possible that the thickness of the top bar of the 5 and the relatively greater protrusion of the bottom loop are from circulation flattening, so I am not convinced that the piece is spurious. As I am uncertain, I wanted to ask for everybody's opinions here.
I understand that many on this forum would consider this coin a cull (and thus I am comfortable posting it here as I do not anticipate generating much competition on the bidding). Eye appeal nonwithstanding, it would fit my
Liberty nickel folder because of the clear date and lack of holes.
